While a large section of Bollywood has already jumped on the web series bandwagon, producer/ director Karan Johar is waiting for the dust to settle before joining in. The Ae Dil Hai Mushkil director feels it’s too early for him to enter that space.
“As a producer, I wouldn’t enter the digital platform at the moment. I don’t think I would want to be an early bird,” he told the press at a recent event.
“Whosoever is not making films is saying, ‘Let’s make a web series or a digital show’. So, all bad scripts are being turned into web series. I would say don’t make anything altogether but don’t do this; that if a film is not possible then (you) choose internet,” Johar added.
“Digital is a very powerful platform. It is a growing kid and if that kid grows more, it can eat films up. There is a possibility. Let it establish first. Once it does, I will also join it. I am anyway an opportunist.”
Meanwhile, several established players like Yash Raj Films (Y-Films), Ekta Kapoor (Alt Balaji), Viacom 18 (Voot) and Excel Entertainment, among others, are set to launch their new, original web shows in the coming months.
