The web series scene in India is exploding with several small and big players releasing new original shows online. The trend that was, in a way, brought into the limelight by the success of shows like Permanent Roommates and TVF Pitchers last year, has now picked up pace with names like Yash Raj, Viacom 18 and Bindass among others, jumping on board this web series bandwagon.
To keep you up to date, here’s a roundup of the top ongoing, recently-released as well upcoming web series for 2016, so far.
A North-Indian groom and his Chinese bride-to-be deal with their crazy, chaotic families in what looks to be a hilarious clash of cultures. Chinese Bhasad will release on Viacom18’s new digital platform Voot. The release date is yet to be announced. You can check out the trailer below:
Girl In The City
A small-town 21-year-old girl comes to Mumbai with big dreams – that’s the premise of this upcoming web series by Bindass. Girl In The City stars Mithila Palkar, Of Viral Marathi ‘Cups’ Video Fame and premieres on 28 April 2016, on Facebook.
A.I.SHA – My Virtual Girlfriend
Sam, a 26-year old app developer, is excited about his new music app presentation at Future Lens, the company he works for. But his boss from hell, Sid, will not let him have his day.
Meanwhile, Sam, a loner and a socially awkward genius has been creating his own perfect A.I app in secret. The web series released its first episode on YouTube, on 9 April 2016.
I Don’t Watch TV
Catch all the drama behind the melodrama!
Starring Nakuul Mehta, with Alekh Sangal and Ram Menon, I Don’t Watch TV is a hilarious joyride into the behind-the-scenes drama, power struggles and pure madness of the Indian television industry. The first episode released on 16 April 2016, on YouTube.
Confessions – It’s Complicated
A show about three spirited, vivacious girls – Sameera Saxena, Raka Ghosh and Nupur Murthy – from different parts of the country who live and work together in Mumbai, Confessions – It’s Complicated is a fun, slice of life series.
This 30-episode web series has been conceptualized for the ‘on-the-go’ audience with each episode having a runtime of 8-10 minutes. The show premiered on Facebook on 4 April 2016 and new episodes release online every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. You can follow the show and watch all episodes here.
Permanent Roommates Season 2
Permanent Roommates is probably one of the most popular Indian web series out there right now. The show, developed and produced by The Viral Fever, is currently on its second season.
Season 2 of the show continues the story of Mikesh and Tanya – a young couple in a live-in relationship now looking at getting married. The first four episodes of the season (including a two-part episode 3) are streaming on TVFPlay. Click here to watch.
Pop icon of the 90s, Baba Sehgal, is back – this time with a web-series based on MTV Roadies.
Titled Soadies, the upcoming web series is a satirical spoof on the popular reality show, Roadies and will have Sehgal play the role of a “tough task master”. It will stream on Viacom18’s Voot. The release date is yet to be announced.
Y-Films’ Ladies Room
After delivering some great, entertaining web shows like Bang Baaja Baaraat and Man’s World, Yash Raj Films’ youth division, Y-Films, has announced another web series titled Ladies Room. The concept revolve around the misadventures of 2 girls in 6 different ‘loos.’ Well, whatever it is, it definitely sounds interesting and original.
It is slated to release in May on Y-Film’s official YouTube channel.
The ‘Babuji’ of Bollywood Alok Nath is all set for an image revamp as he plays India’s first reluctant host in this steamy chat show. He will get celebrities to talk about their deep, dark desires and all things sexy!
Sinskari will premiere online on Voot. The release date is yet to be announced.
Barun Sobti And Surbhi Jyoti’s Untitled Web Series
Earlier this month, reports surfaced stating that Indian TV stars Barun Sobti and Surbhi Jyoti will be seen in an upcoming web series. Soon after, it was revealed that anchor-actor Karan Wahi is also a part of this project.
Not much is known about this mysterious show except that it is produced by 4 Lions Productions – the same production house that delivered hit shows like Qubool Hai, Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon, Humse Hai Life and Humsafars. The web series is expected to release later this year.
And that’s not all. Apart from these shows, you can also look forward to Indian stand-up comedian Kenny Sebastian’s sci-fi comedy web series called Star Boyz and SnG Comedy’s Game Of Cubicles – both expected to release in the coming months.
