The hilarious and witty Baba Sehgal is back – this time with a web series titled “Soadies.” Sehgal – who enjoys a massive fan following on social media thanks to his regular video uploads and comical tweets – plays the head of a family obsessed with “MTV Roadies” in this 6-episode spoof series.
TubeScoop spoke to ‘India’s first rapper’ ahead of his new show’s online premiere and he really cracked us up while giving a preview of “Soadies.”
“My taklapan helped me bag this show!” jokes Sehgal when we ask him how he came on board this project. Check out excerpts from the interview, below:
So, what is “Soadies” all about?
It’s basically a spoof on “MTV Roadies” where this family of 4 comprising myself, my mother and 2 kids are all “Roadies” fans. We’re a family from Chandigarh who have moved to Delhi…you know, it’s a typical loud Punjabi family.
So, for everything happening in the house, there’s a task. For example, if my mother has to give me a glass of water, there’s a task involved and she has to complete it. It’s like any of these reality shows where contestants have tasks n all that…and obviously this plays out in a “Roadies” format. But it’s a very simple show with a lot of fun and humour and a lot of my tweets have been used in this.
Lot of abuses are hurled around in MTV Roadies…
I made this show in a way that it won’t be abusive. “Roadies” basically becomes very abusive but we were clear that we won’t take this to that extent. Little bit here and there is fine because it’s a web series, so it’s come out really very interesting and it’s a fun program.
How did you come on board this web series?
I think it maybe happened because of my Twitter and Facebook following and also the reactions to some of my YouTube videos like “Going To The Gym,” “Chicken Fried Rice,” “Rihanna O Rihanna,” etc. I’m proud that as an Indipop artist, on our own levels, we’ve crossed 5.5 million views overall – and that is an important factor for any company to associate with someone and plus I’m not into any political issues…it’s all fun.
When I heard this concept, it really excited me. They wanted me to play Soadie, and Raghu and Rajiv [MTV Roadies judges] — they’re both bald and I’m also bald so that could be one of the reasons also they thought ki chalo…Raghu-Rajiv takle hain toh iss takle ko bhi le lo, you know (laughs).
I don’t mind that, if my taklapan is fetching me money and fetching me shows then why not. Woh kehte hai na, “mehnat toh rang layegi hee” (laughs). So, I guess that was also one of the reasons where they felt the need of having a bald guy on the show and the best choice was me.
Will anyone from “MTV Roadies” be making an appearance on the show?
Yes, Raghu-Rajiv…they’re appearing on the last episode. On 27th May, we’re shooting together. The show’s storyline is such that, Raghu, Rajiv and people that have been hosting…they are our gurus…they’re our bhagwaan.
Like, in one of the episodes, something happens to the family’s son and he’s injured – a car runs over him and the police arrests Raghu-Rajiv. So, the Soadie family is not bothered about the son, ki uske uppar gadi chala di and all. We go to the police and tell them, ‘ki arrey normal person ka beta hee injured hua hai na…we don’t mind it but unko chhodo, woh bhagwaan hai hamare,’ you know (laughs). So that kind of stuff is happening.
“Soadies” will have 6 episodes of about 10 minutes each and will stream on Viacom 18’s new digital platform Voot. You can click here or on the image below to watch episode 1 titled “Meet The Soadies”
