Saif Ali Khan starring in a Netflix original Indian series is damn exciting. That’s because he is probably one of the few Bollywood stars who’s best suited to this format. Saif is effortlessly cool, understated and brings just the right mix of stardom and talent which is needed for a web series of this magnitude.
“I think web content is really powerful and that’s where we all need to be,” said the actor during a recent interview. “Television has a lot of restrictions. Web content, on the other hand, is devoid of any kind of censorship. It’s a free environment.”
Talking about Sacred Games, he shared: “I am excited about the quality and content of our show. The book was fantastic and I hope we can do justice to it.”
Based on Indian author Vikram Chandra’s critically-acclaimed best-selling book, Sacred Games, the original series is set against the backdrop of organized crime, corruption, politics and espionage scene in Mumbai. It weaves an intriguing cobweb that connects the stories of the privileged and the downtrodden, the wretched and the bloodthirsty. Saif will play a character called Sartaj Singh – who’s a policeman in the novel.
“His role is layered and complex, and we are thrilled to be working with such a fantastic actor to bring this story to a global audience,” said Erik Barmack, vice president of international original series at Netflix.
Netflix has partnered with Phantom Films to produce this web series. An official release date is yet to be announced. Watch this space for more updates and exclusive interviews.
