There’s no doubt that ‘The Kapil Sharma Show,’ which airs on Sony TV, is one of the most popular television shows in India right now. And Sony Pictures Networks India has successfully used this mass popularity to bump up its viewership on the digital front.
Undekha Tadka – a series of videos comprising unseen episodic footage of ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ is the most watched online content on Sony LIV, the digital platform of Sony Pictures Networks India.
The comedy programme on Sony LIV’s app, website and YouTube has made it the third most viewed content online, securing over 300 million views and counting; a feat matched only by Dhanush’s ‘Kolaveri Di’ and ‘Yo Yo Honey Singh’s’ cover version of ‘Dheere dheere’
“We take comedy seriously,” Uday Sodhi, executive vice president and head digital business at Sony Pictures Networks India, told Economic Times, adding that comedy on digital has been one of the most preferred genres by the audiences. He also stated that the reason behind’s Undekha Tadka’s massive online following, is that it offers more than what the TV show does.
Marketing expert Harish Bijoor added, “Color’s loss was an accidental gain by Sony (Kapil Sharma moved his show from Colors TV to Sony following differences with the channel). “Kapil Sharma gave back LIV its mojo.”
According to Bijoor, the challenge for LIV now is to maintain the competitive edge that the comedy show has provided to the digital platform. “It’s the momentum which has to be maintained.”
