Some of the biggest Bollywood producers like Aditya Chopra (Yash Raj Films) and Ekta Kapoor (Balaji) have already ventured into the digital content space with their shows up and streaming on the web. Which makes us wonder why the prolific and ‘with it’ filmmaker Karan Johar has not yet joined the bandwagon. Well, here’s what he has to say about that
“I have to say that unfortunately if films don’t get their act together, maybe the step child of entertainment — digital will take over. But not just yet because no platform is strong enough right now. Nothing that is created for our country yet that you can leverage and tune into the way you make shows in the West,” said the director during a recent interview.
KJo also added that the current crop of web series lack originality and are too influenced by Western TV shows.
“You have to be different from their narrative and tell stories that will work in the Indian context. And I don’t think anyone is doing that. Everyone is emulating the West.”
When asked if he’s got plans of making a web series under his Dharma banner, he replied: “I want to and I am very clear that when Dharma goes digital, we will do it in a way that it’s meant to be. I do not want to get into it without having a platform that will be visited.”
Well, going by Karan Johar’s track record, it’s safe to say that if and when he does produce (or direct) a web series – it’ll definitely be a massive hit!
