Irrfan Khan in Tokyo Trials

Trust Irrfan Khan to be brutally honest and non-diplomatic when it comes to answering questions around Hollywood-Bollywood comparisons. The talented actor, who stars in the Japanese web series Tokyo Trials, was recently asked if he would be open to acting in an Indian web series. Here’s what he had to say:

Humare paas web series banane ke liye talent nahin hai (We don’t have the talent to make a web series); it’s the bitter truth.”

“They [Indian creators] are neither passionate nor have the understanding of a good story. We will not be able to deliver a world-class web series since such projects are born purely from passion,” the Hindi Medium actor told Midday.

“Earlier, directors used to think of ways to break into Hollywood. Today, one can sit in India and make a world class product. But we are taking it lightly by making stupid comedies. I doubt if we will be able to cash in on the digital platform.”

Well, there you go. As Irrfan said – the bitter truth. Hopefully, some of the original Indian web series in production – which will soon release on platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix – will be able to change this general perception. Fingers crossed!
