Sumeet Vyas is stepping on to unfamiliar terrain – in more ways than one! The actor who’s wooed audience in shows like TVF’s Permanent Roommates and Tripling, will soon be seen in an action-packed reality web series on Voot!
Sumeet will star in Voot’s desi adaptation of popular survivor series – Stupid Man, Smart Phone. It will be quite a departure for the city boy who will be thrown in 3 unpredictable and difficult terrains with just a smartphone for survival. And mind you, these terrains are not the kinds where Uber and Swiggy are serviceable, yet!
We caught up with the young star just before he took off to begin shooting for the exciting series. Check out what he has to say.
Tell us about Stupid Man, Smart Phone.
The idea of the show is that we’re so dependent on our cell phones in today’s age – from the time we wake up to the time we sleep, we’re on the phone all the time. For news, entertainment, for connectivity, for everything.

So, the idea is that if you were stranded in a tricky situation, like in the show, the first terrain that we’re going to do is – the jungles of Tamil Nadu. So it is more like a survival show where I’ll be in the Tamil Nadu border area in the jungles and the only aid I have is a cell phone. Because I’m stuck in a situation – if there is no food, if there is a wild animal, if I’m stuck with a snake or any of these situations– the phone is the only rescue I have. So how much does it help? And is the smartphone really your best friend? That’s the concept of the show.
Stupid Man, Smart Phone is originally a British reality TV series and Voot has officially bought the rights for it and they’re doing it. I think it’s the first time that a digital platform is doing it. Generally, you see this trend in TV shows – where they adapt shows from abroad. BBC is going to be producing the show and Vodafone is the network partner on it.
How are you preparing for it?
Yaar, prepare toh mei zyada nehi kar para hoon kyunki ye [makers] mujhe zyada bataa nehi rahe hain! They’re scaring me. They’ve said, “we won’t give you any idea now, we will tell you all the tasks once you’re in the jungle.”
There is also going to be a celebrity guest on every terrain that we do. So we’re going to be doing 3 terrains – first is Tamil Nadu jungles. Second is, I think, Rajasthan – the desert. And the third is the mountains – somewhere North East or East. And on every terrain, there will be a guest who’ll be accompanying me. So not only do I have to take care of myself and survive, I have to also make sure that the guest is safe.
Any particular terrain that you’re more excited about?
I’m more kicked about the mountains because I’ve always been very, very fond of the hills. A part of me wants to be in the hills all the time. Also, the weather is good. It’s going to be cold. Being a Mumbai boy, I miss the winters. That’s one weather I miss a lot. because you get to wear all the good clothes, and you get to eat all the great things and you can still be fit! (laughs). So that is one terrain I’m looking forward to. And jungle is the terrain I’m really scared of because I don’t know much about it.
Anything you’re dreading to encounter?
Haan, ek toh chuhe se mujhe bhaut darr lagta hai. I hate rats! And yeah, I hope I don’t have to eat insects and cockroaches and ants. I hope I manage to find some fruits (laughs).
Shooting for Stupid Man, Smart Phone has already kicked off in Tamil Nadu. The reality web series will release and stream on Voot. Watch this space for the release date along with more updates and interviews!
