Last year the Indian web series lineup for 2017 looked incredible. Amazon Prime Video announced a slate of original series. Ekta Kapoor’s Alt Balaji commissioned some bold, innovative shows. And other established as well as independent players like TVF, AIB, Y-Films etc teased some promising web series in the works.

Well, here we are now with half the year over, and so far, only Amazon’s Inside Edge has managed to really make some kind of impact in the mainstream Indian web series space. Even TVF’s Bisht, Please failed to replicate the kind of success and response garnered by the company’s earlier shows.

But, it looks like the best is yet to come. Here’s a little glimpse into what’s in store for all us web watchers. Our roundup of the best Indian web series set to release in the coming months:

Breathe

R Madhavan

While not much is known about the subject or story of this upcoming series, it stars R Madhavan along with Sapna Pabbi (The Trip), Amit Sadh and model/actor Anuj Sachdeva. The show is produced by Abundantia Entertainment – the company which produced films like Baby and Airlift – and will release and stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Sacred Games

Saif Ali Khan plays policeman Sartaj Singh in this adaptation of the novel by the same name. Set against the backdrop of organized crime, corruption, politics and espionage scene in Mumbai, the series weaves an intriguing cobweb that connects the stories of the privileged and the downtrodden, the wretched and the bloodthirsty. The series also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui who plays a deadly gangster.

AIB’s The Ministry

AIBAIB’s first fiction series – The Ministry – is a political satire written by Gursimran Khamba, Zakir Khan along with some AIB First Draft season one graduates. “The show is a humorous take on Indian politics. India hasn’t seen a political satire show since a long time. In fact, the only show we have seen was the Indian adaptation of ‘Yes Minister’ (‘Ji Mantriji’). We are hoping that the audience will like this experience as we haven’t seen much like this before. It will be a 10-episode show,” said AIB’s Tanmay Bhat in an earlier statement.

Guns And Thighs

‘The true story of Mumbai mafia in its raw and real form’ – is how director Ram Gopal Varma describes his gritty, dark and bold new web series. A trailer for the series is out and we must say, it looks pretty damn engaging. This just might be the once-acclaimed filmmaker’s return to glory.

Voot’s Untitled Reality Web Series

sumeet vyasUnfortunately we cannot disclose much about this show except that it’s an action-packed reality web series featuring Sumeet Vyas (Permanent Roommates), Manish Paul and actress Evelyn Sharma among others. Watch out for this one – it should be a much-needed boost for reality web content in India.

Ragini MMS 2.2

riya senThis horror web-series stars Karishma Sharma and Riya Sen in key roles. As the title suggests, it’s most probably going to be an extension of Ekta Kapoor’s Ragini MMS movies. So expect lots of chills, thrills, screams and titillation.

Bose

indian web seriesAnother web series from Alt Balaji – this one promises to be quite the opposite of the above-mentioned Riya Sen starrer. National Award-winning talents Hansal Mehta and Rajkummar Rao come together for an original series on Subhas Chandra Bose.

Bose will showcase the freedom fighter’s journey from his school and college days to his disappearance. One look at Rajkummar’s commendable physical transformation for this role is enough to make this series an eagerly-awaited one.
